From Perimeter College to the Stars: Former Georgia State Student Works on NASA's Program That Will Land the First Woman on the Moon

Kavya Manyapu is fulfilling a lifelong dream of working for NASA.
The former Georgia State University Perimeter College student — and now rocket scientist — has joined NASA’s Artemis program at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Artemis aims to take the first woman to the moon by 2024, 55 years after Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong’s history-making landing.

Manyapu’s career in aerospace has been a blast from the start, she says. For almost a decade, she worked in multiple roles with Boeing’s Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 Starliner program in Houston.

Two Perimeter Students Named National Jack Kent Cooke Scholars

Two Georgia State University Perimeter College students will receive one of the largest private scholarships in the country, the national Jack Kent Cooke (JKC) Foundation has announced. Awa Cisse and Gideon Melvin have been awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship to attend the four-year college or university of their choice. The scholarship, designed to help the nation’s top two-year college students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year institutions, provides each recipient up to $40,000 per year for up to three years.

Eight Perimeter Students Named Semifinalists for National Scholarship

Eight Georgia State University Perimeter College students have been named semifinalists for the national Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Perimeter College students represent all but one of the semifinalists chosen from Georgia. They are among 406 semifinalists selected from more than 1,500 applicants attending 398 community colleges in 44 states and the District of Columbia.

Trailblazer in Education at DeKalb College/Georgia Perimeter College Inducted Into Black Heritage of Rockdale County Hall of Fame

Dr. Jacquelyn M. Belcher, president of DeKalb College/Georgia Perimeter College from 1995 to 2005, was recently inducted into the Black Heritage of Rockdale County Hall of Fame.

Dr. Belcher pioneered in several ways at the institution, which consolidated with Georgia State University in 2016.

She was the first Black woman to lead the college, the first Black woman to head any USG institution, and the first Black person to head a USG institution of higher education that is not historically Black.

Perimeter College Creates New African-American Studies Associate's Degree Pathway

Students in the African-American Studies (AAS) pathway will take core curriculum and African American-focused courses to earn an associate of arts degree in a new degree pathway program this fall at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College.

About 20 Perimeter instructors and professors this month will begin teaching four AAS courses examining African American literature, social issues, history and culture. While work had been taking place over the course of recent years, the timing is significant following months of national and international demonstrations and civil discourse about racial inequality and systemic discrimination.

'Familia in College': LLP Program at Georgia State Provides Support for Students from Latinx Backgrounds

The Latino Leadership Pipeline (LLP) program aims to increase the number of students of Hispanic or Latinx heritage graduating from Georgia State. It provides scholarship money, mentors, internships, leadership development and learning communities. It also requires each recipient to perform community service.

Latinx students make up nearly 14 percent of the more than 18,000 students enrolled at Perimeter College, according to August 2019 statistics. More than 70 students have received Perimeter’s LLP scholarship since its inception in 2017.

The heart of LLP is its ability not only to wrap students in supportive services and connect them to resources that ensure academic achievement, but also to create a sense of belonging.

Dr. Cynthia Lester of Georgia State University’s Perimeter College has been selected as a fellow for the IAspire Leadership Academy, a program aimed at developing and training Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) faculty and administrators from underrepresented groups for senior leadership roles at colleges and universities. The new program is housed at the University of Georgia.
