The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce the speaker of the 2022 Groundbreaker Speaker Series Lecture, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, President Emerita of Spelman College and Bennett College for Women, on Feb. 15.
The Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions announces the 2021 J. Rhodes Haverty Lecture, featuring Dr. David Satcher. The lecture will be held Tuesday, October 5 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Speaker’s Auditorium on the Georgia State campus. A virtual option is also available. The lecture is free and open to the public; however, reservations are required.
The Georgia State Law Center for Access to Justice hosted its annual Public Interest Keynote virtually on Sept. 1. This year’s speaker was Samuel Spital, director of litigation for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Professor Lauren Sudeall, faculty director of the Center for Access to Justice, said that she chose Spital because of the timely nature of the Legal Defense Fund’s work and because many Georgia State Law students have an interest in pro bono and public service legal work.
“What better legal organization than the Legal Defense Fund, which has been a constant presence in the fight for racial justice,” Sudeall said. “We’re lucky to have someone like Sam join us to talk about the incredible work he has done at LDF, and also about the path that led him there. We hope it will serve as inspiration for our students, regardless of the path they choose to follow.”
Dr. Chandra Ford, a leading researcher in the study of health disparities, will deliver a virtual presentation for the Georgia State University community about racism in public health, entitled "Applying Lessons from Racism: Science & Tools for the Public Health Professional," from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Dr. Ford is a Professor and Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Racism, Social Justice, and Health at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). The talk is organized by the School of Public Health Task Force on Racial Equity and Inclusion.
