Department of Africana Studies Commemorates 1992 Sit-In That Led to the Department’s Creation
Georgia State University’s Department of Africana Studies will commemorate and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1992 sit-in on campus that led to the creation of the department and other efforts to embrace diversity on campus. The department will host a series of virtual and in-person events from Monday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 6 that are free and open to the campus community and public at large. The first panel will feature a conversation with some of the student activists.

The Office of the Provost held a Networking Reception for Underrepresented Minority Faculty on Oct. 22, 2019, giving an opportunity for faculty from underrepresented backgrounds to socialize, network, connect, and discuss and share ideas relating to a wide range of topics in recruitment, retention, engagement, promotion, research, teaching and more. The reception was part of the university's efforts to take action in implementing the recommendations of the Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty, which seeks to build Georgia State as a national leader in faculty diversity, equity and inclusion; specifically, to improve the building of community, which was identified as a need by faculty.
