Advancing Graduate and Professional Education for All: The Center for the Advancement of Students and Alumni

The Center for the Advancement of Students and Alumni, or the CASA, is Georgia State’s initiative to encourage and support promising undergraduate students, especially from backgrounds that remain underrepresented in professional positions, to consider and prepare for education beyond the bachelor’s degree. Since its launch in 2018, the CASA has assisted thousands of students from across Georgia State’s large and diverse student population with learning both the logistics of applying to graduate school, and the soft skills required to move forward.

Georgia State Graduate Embarks on Foreign Service Career as 2021 Pickering Fellow

Joshua Fife, an alumnus of Georgia State University who graduated in 2019 with a degree in journalism, has received the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship. Fife is one of 45 Pickering Fellows selected for 2021 from institutions including Columbia, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and the University of California, Berkeley.

Gholnecsar Muhammad is an associate professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education at Georgia State. Her work and research are centered around culturally responsive education.

Nirej Sekhon Wants us to Reimagine the Role of Police in Society

Nirej Sekhon still remembers his last case working as a public defender in Seattle. A man was charged with theft for stealing a $2 burrito from a convenience store. The man had prior convictions, so the plea recommendation was one year in jail. Sekhon’s client readily admitted taking the burrito, but he didn’t think he should have to go to jail for a year for being hungry.

That case among many others like it, made Sekhon think about how the society often criminalizes rather than ameliorates poverty. It also made him think about the role that attorneys can play in connecting unfair practices to larger questions of systemic inequality and public perceptions of injustice.

“Public defenders have this potentially significant role to play in transforming the criminal justice system,” Sekhon says.

Associate Professor Researches Racial and Ethnic Disparities, and How Children and Students Can Be Prepared to Thrive Against Adversities

Ciara Smalls Glover, an Associate Professor of Psychology at Georgia State, is examining factors that mitigate the adverse effects of discrimination against persons from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds, including consequences for their emotional, academic and physical health.

“I was originally studying stress and coping, and from that I learned about the weight of a persistent stressor for communities of color—and that’s racial and ethnic discrimination.”

One of the factors that literature has found to be especially protective is racial and ethnic identity, Dr. Glover said. These are the beliefs and attitudes about an individual’s group membership. She said that these beliefs and attitudes evolve over time, with family playing a critical role.

“Identity doesn’t just happen. It develops. And one of the salient influences in that development is family,” Dr. Glover explained. “The role of the family has been central to my work and looking at the varied messages that families send to prepare their child for independence. Families from under-represented groups often don’t get permission to be portrayed in multi-faceted ways.”

First Panther PRIME Scholarship Recipient Named

Lenval Duffus, a rising senior from Snellville, Ga., majoring in political science, is the first recipient of the Panther PRIME Scholarship, from the partnership program between Georgia State’s Honors College and Multicultural Center that supports the educational and professional goals of African American male students and provides both mentorship and leadership opportunities.

“It’s an exceptionally strong collective of Black men from a variety of different backgrounds who constantly push each other toward high goals and foster each other’s academic and personal growth,” Duffus said. “It feels really enriching to be part of an organization that gives back to the GSU community while also speaking up on issues that affect the Black community.”

Georgia State University Remembers John Lewis, 1940-2020

Georgia State University President Mark Becker wrote to the university community July 18, 2020 about the passing of U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights champion, a major figure in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, and a leader for social justice in society.

Additionally, Georgia State's first-year novel for the 2019-20 academic year was Rep. Lewis' "March: Book Three," part of an autobiographical black and white graphic novel trilogy about the Civil Rights Movement, told through the perspective of Rep. Lewis. He spoke at the fall 2019 semester freshman convocation, held Aug. 25, 2019.
