Nicolle Parsons-Pollard Named Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Georgia State President M. Brian Blake has named Nicolle Parsons-Pollard as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs effective Feb. 1, having served in an interim role since January 2022.

Since arriving at Georgia State in January 2020 as associate provost for faculty affairs, Dr. Parsons-Pollard has created, implemented and championed a variety of faculty development programs to support and strengthen faculty in teaching and research, as well as leadership programming for department chairs and other administrators.

With this move, Dr. Parsons-Pollard will become the first Black woman appointed as Provost in the university's history. She also will become the first Black person in GSU's history to hold the role in a permanent capacity.

Georgia State University American Sign Language Program Teaches Fluency and Cultural Awareness

When considering world languages, for some, European languages might be the first the come to mind.

However, Perimeter College at Georgia State University also offers an associate’s degree in a pathway focusing on American Sign Language (ASL), providing an in-depth understanding and using those skills in allyship for the deaf community. Rick Robinson, the Associate Chair of Humanities who works with world languages which houses the ASL department.

“The deaf community has their own culture, and then they have their own language and they're underrepresented” said Rick Robinson, Associate Chair of the Humanities Department at Perimeter. “People are often afraid to approach deaf people because they are afraid of not knowing the culture.”

Gholnecsar Muhammad is an associate professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education at Georgia State. Her work and research are centered around culturally responsive education.

Nirej Sekhon Wants us to Reimagine the Role of Police in Society

Nirej Sekhon still remembers his last case working as a public defender in Seattle. A man was charged with theft for stealing a $2 burrito from a convenience store. The man had prior convictions, so the plea recommendation was one year in jail. Sekhon’s client readily admitted taking the burrito, but he didn’t think he should have to go to jail for a year for being hungry.

That case among many others like it, made Sekhon think about how the society often criminalizes rather than ameliorates poverty. It also made him think about the role that attorneys can play in connecting unfair practices to larger questions of systemic inequality and public perceptions of injustice.

“Public defenders have this potentially significant role to play in transforming the criminal justice system,” Sekhon says.
