Georgia State Faculty Receive $800,000 Grant To Diversify Early Childhood Education Workforce in Georgia

Georgia State University faculty members Tonia Durden and Stacey French-Lee have received a two-year, $800,000 grant from the Early Educator Investment Collaborative (EEIC) to expand and diversify Georgia’s early childhood education workforce.
Their grant, entitled “Project SEED: Increasing the Diversity, Quality and Quantity of Our ECE Workforce,” will provide pathways for culturally and linguistically diverse students to earn a four-year degree in birth through five education.

The Center for Studies of Africa and Its Diaspora (CSAD) and the Georgia State University Library have partnered with the Decatur Book Festival to highlight five Georgia State scholars with recently published books, each providing a unique lens on race and social justice issues.

The second of 4 talks in the series highlights the work of authors Gina Caison and GSU Professor Tiffany King on Monday, October 12 from 6:30pm-7:30pm EST.

T.E.E.M.S. AmeriCorps Program Receives INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine’s 2020 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award

Georgia State University’s Technology, Engineering, Environment, Math and Science (T.E.E.M.S.) AmeriCorps Program received the 2020 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). T.E.E.M.S. AmeriCorps will be featured, along with 49 other recipients, in the September 2020 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected the T.E.E.M.S. AmeriCorps Program, a program of the College of Education & Human Development’s Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence, because it provides K-12 supplemental instruction support during the school day and after-school programs in math and science.

Perimeter College Creates New African-American Studies Associate's Degree Pathway

Students in the African-American Studies (AAS) pathway will take core curriculum and African American-focused courses to earn an associate of arts degree in a new degree pathway program this fall at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College.

About 20 Perimeter instructors and professors this month will begin teaching four AAS courses examining African American literature, social issues, history and culture. While work had been taking place over the course of recent years, the timing is significant following months of national and international demonstrations and civil discourse about racial inequality and systemic discrimination.

International Initiatives and African American Male Intiative Expanding Study Abroad Outreach

Georgia State University’s Office of International Initiatives has been selected to receive an IDEAS (Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students) Grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Capacity Building Program for U.S. Study Abroad. Georgia State is one of 24 colleges and universities from across the United States, selected from 115 applicants, to create, expand, and/or diversify American student mobility overseas in support of U.S. foreign policy goals. The grant will expand study abroad outreach to African American males at the university through a partnership between International Initiatives and the African American Male Initiative on campus.

The Capacity Building Program for U.S. Study Abroad is a program of the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and supported in its implementation by World Learning.

“We are committed to continuing our support for U.S. colleges and universities as they build their study abroad capacity now, in anticipation of a strong return to U.S. student mobility in the future… When American students study abroad, they support critical U.S. foreign policy goals by building relationships with foreign peers, sharing American culture and values, and developing valuable career skills. With these international experiences, the next generation of Americans is being equipped with the skills necessary to compete and succeed globally,” said Marie Royce, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
