ABOUT THIS SITE
With the presentation of the report of the Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty at the start of the 2019-20 academic year, the Office of the Provost put a plan into action, including forming an Implementation Steering Committee that first met in December 2019. In October 2019, the Provost's Office sponsored an activity that followed one of the recommendations, the first reception for underrepresented minority faculty.
Confronting Georgia State's past, in February 2020 the Provost's Office sponsored the first Groundbreaker Lecture, held in honor of Myra Payne Elliott, Barbara Pace Hunt and Iris Mae Welch, to recognize the bravery of these women in their attempt to desegregate Georgia State. While they were still denied entry into Georgia State, their court case laid the legal ground work for the eventual integration of the university and other segregated institutions of higher education.
During the spring 2020 semester, the university also announced its membership in the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity and undertook the COACHE (Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education) survey process as recommended by the Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty to assess the campus climate for full-time faculty. The COACHE process provides data to make assessments that can be taken into action.
In March 2020, the Office of the Provost began the planning of a more website to inform the university community about efforts across the institution and serve as a hub for updates, reporting and other items.
Accelerated by the events of May and early June 2020 with the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks and countless other Black Americans, this national reckoning with America's historical and present systemic racism and injustice has emphasized the importance of the university's efforts to examine its own shortcomings, highlight its myriad initiatives and programs through a central information hub and look toward what the university can do to make an impact in its community and society.
Work in the field is continuous, as is this website. We invite you to return for updates and new resources as Georgia State continues its journey toward becoming an institution for all and strives to become an example for other institutions.
