Dr. Chandra Ford, a leading researcher in the study of health disparities, will deliver a virtual presentation about racism in public health, entitled "Applying Lessons from Racism: Science & Tools for the Public Health Professional," from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Dr. Ford is a Professor and Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Racism, Social Justice, and Health at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). The talk is organized by the School of Public Health Task Force on Racial Equity and Inclusion. The talk is free, but registration is required; register at https://bit.ly/sph-ford.
In 2019, the American Public Health Association (APHA) Press published Racism: Science & Tools for the Public Health Professional. This was the first time APHA, the flagship professional society for the field of public health, produced a book dedicated to the topic of racism.
Racism seeks to equip public health professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to begin to treat racism as a threat to the health of the public. In this presentation, Dr. Chandra Ford, who co-edited Racism with Derek Griffith, Marino Bruce and Keon Gilbert, discusses the impetus behind the book, its relevance for people working in academic settings, and specific actions that faculty, staff and students within schools and programs of public health can take.
The presentation closes with Dr. Ford posing a series of questions to the audience intended to provoke discussion and inform the development of anti-racism interventions that begin “at home.”
